Quite Interesting

ECMA - the body who submitted the standard, has raised 76 comments highlighting improvements to be made.

This site is called DIS29500.org because that is the official designation of the draft standard, and also some of the comments propose changing the name from OOXML to something else.

We don’t yet know who one set of comments (NB13) belong to. If anyone can put a country to the category then please post a comment on one of their comments. - update: it was Malaysia.

The comments from Tunisia are in French. They are quite easy to understand, but if anyone can do a good quality translation that would be a help. - update: translation done by Luc Bollen.

The terminology can get a bit confusing on the website - we are asking people to make comments on comments - maybe one or the other should be renamed to submission or metacomment or something else.

To get the data into the site the documents were opened in OpenOffice.org Writer, then copied to Calc, tidied up manually (merged cells are evil) then imported to Lotus Notes 8 via the built in Symphony spreadsheet (I had been working on some code to import Calc into Notes so this was easy) exported to XML then imported to WordPress. The import file was just over 2Mb in size.

Finland and Australia both abstained from the vote, but submitted the comments they were working on anyway. Didn’t know they were going to be allowed to do that (there was no abstain with comments option).

The main difficulty in importing the data was smartquotes and em dashes that Word had autocorrected.

I messed up the import of the comments from Iran first time round. They are in now, so there is a total of 3489 comments, this might rise to 3522 soon, ECMA have found some extra ones somewhere. - turns out I missed the last 27 Danish documents, plus perhaps another couple. They will be added soon. - nearly there now, just some sillyness to resolve around some blank comments at FR-0559 and CL-0125

This page is the most read page on the site after the home page. Probably because it is quite interesting.
